Tooling Engineer

Job Description

We are hiring a Tooling Engineer for an important Central Government department undergoing significant change. 

The purpose of this role is to ensure tools used for the monitoring, management and support of the estate are maintained and developed to achieve maximum efficiency by investigating, troubleshooting, diagnosing and resolving incidents whilst liaising with internal technical consumers, third parties and service management on improvements and enhancements.


Responsibilities include:

  • Provide Network Tooling Application management support for the estate network across multiple monitoring and automation products, including Entuity, MS System Centre inc SC Orchestrator, CMDB and Service Manager.

  • VMware vCenter 7 experience preferable. Installation, configuration (including Networking), administration and Troubleshooting, as well as deployment and management of VMs.

  • Ability to Assess new Tooling capabilities against existing network configuration and devices to ensure maximum monitoring coverage. This includes understanding the various protocols used across the Estate, and ensuring that the capability of new Tools are supported.

  • Leverage application APIs to expose data and present in appropriate formats for consumption by Senior Management

  • Receiving of new project implementations and designs in to live support.

  • Technical Authority review of proposed changes to ensure quality and reduce risk.

  • Lead and Manage Investigations allocated by The Network Tooling Manager.

  • Deliver high quality work to meet expectations and Business needs.

  • Maintain Professional and Technical Development.

  • Contribute to Continual Service Improvement.

  • Management of risk, feeding into wider delivery groups

  • Attend technical meetings, change advisory boards, service reviews when required.

  • Participate in activity to maintain network tooling, ensuring network is proactively managed and capacity and performance management conducted

  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including process procedure and work instructions, following the internal quality framework

  • Develop and contribute to the training of junior staff


Specific professional/academic qualifications for the role include:

  • 5+ years of experience in technical support or customer facing technical role, enterprise experience a must

  • Experience of Network Troubleshooting, packet analysis

  • NPMD Tooling (Netscout/Riverbed, etc)

  • Scripting skills (Python/Powershell/Curl/Perl, MySQL, .Net, C sharp)

  • Network Automation

  • Experienced in support and configuration of Monitoring and Automation products

  • Active Directory, Hyper-V, SQL, LAN, WAN, VLAN, WLAN.

  • SQL/Oracle Database support experience

  • CCNP qualified

  • ITIL v3 Foundation certified

  • Risk Management

  • Strong Documentation and presentation skills

  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills

  • Excellent troubleshooting methodologies and Root Cause Analysis skills

  • Other Tools: BMC, Entuity, Netscout, ServiceNow, Skybox, Riverbed

  • Network: Cisco, Checkpoint, Fortinet, Forcepoint, Aruba

  • Databases: MS SQL, MySQL, Oracle
